Topkapı Palace was the official residence for the Ottoman Sultans from 1465 to 1853. The palace is a vast complex made of four main courtyards and many smaller buildings and is a major tourist attraction today.
At its peak the palace was a royal residence the palace and housed 4,000 people. The Topkapı Palace Museum is today under the administration of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Officials of the ministry as well as armed soldiers of the Turkish military guard it.
