Cala d'Or Information
Cala d’ Or is a very pleasant resort located at the southeast part of the Mallorcan coast, at the municipality of Santanyi.
In the past decades, Cala d’ Or has transformed from a quiet, typical fishing village to an impressively developed resort, stretching for more than 4 kms among little beaches covered with sand.
Fortunately, this development happened gradually and keeping the Mallorcan traditional style was taken under consideration. As a result, the visitors feel like being in a little town.
Among the numerous coves on the coastline of Cala d’Or, the biggest one is Cala Llonga. It has been formed to serve as a marina, creating a natural barrier that separates the two sides of the resort.
To go from one part of the town to the other n foot, you will need to take a rather long walk. Therefore, visitors tend to spend most of their time on one of the two parts, depending on where their hotel is.
Visitors can find most of the attractions gathered at the pedestrian area located at the city centre around Cala Gran. There are many different shops, warm local restaurants and lively bars. However, facilities commonly found in larger resorts to practice golf or other activities are not available.
The beach after which the town is named is a magnificent small cove with clear waters, surrounded by pine trees. As it is a small but popular beach, it attracts big crowds in mid-summer.
The largest beach in the area lies at the Cala Gran, although it is considered large only in relative terms-it measures 100 m depth and 40 m width. These two beaches are equipped with sun umbrellas, deck chairs and pedaloes, available for swimmers to rent. Alternatively, there are a few small lovely coves that unfortunately cannot accommodate too many people.
If you wish to tae a small trip from Cala d’ Or, you can either explore a more exotic beach or visit a local market.
Es Trenc is a picturesque beach with crystal clear water, where you can enjoy the shade of pine trees and the dunes formed by fine sand.
You have the option to rent a parasol or a sun lounger and have a quick lunch at the beach restaurant, but there are no further facilities provided there. One thing you should be aware of is that it is common to see people swimming and sunbathing in nude at Es Trenc.
Felanitx is well known for the local market held on Sunday mornings, where you can find ceramics made by locals. If you like negotiating with the producers for a bargain, you will enjoy shopping there. Fruits, vegetables and other local products are sold in a market at Santanyi, on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the morning.
Nightlife in Cala d’ Or can be found mostly in hotels and alternatively at the buzzing warm bars in the centre of the town, at the pedestrian area. In general, the resort is an excellent choice for those who wish to relax in their holidays and have a few options for entertainment at the same time.
