Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated municipality with over 2.7 million residents. The city of Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was a major political and cultural influence in the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea for over four hundred years from the 1st Century BC until the 4th Century AD. Since the 2nd Century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination. Rome has sicnificant monuments from every historical period since ancient Rome. One of the symbols of the city is the Colosseum. Originally capable of seating 60,000 spectators, the largest amphitheatre in roman empire. It was used for gladiatorial combat. The Basilicas dating from the Paleochristian age include Santa Maria Maggiore and San Paolo Fuori le Mura , both housing precious 4th century AD mosaics.

Beside the cultural and historical sight of interest you can find several architectural and natural sites. A large area in Rome is covered by public parks and nature reserves. The city has one of the largest areas of green space amongst European capitals. The most notable part of this green space is represented by the large number of villas and landscaped gardens created by the Italian aristocracy such as Villa Borghese, Villa Ada, and Villa Doria Pamphili. Numerous fountains can also be found in Rome city, built in all different styles, from Classical and Medieval, to Baroque and Neoclassical. There are also brigdes which cross the Tiber, the most famous of them include the Ponte Cestio, the Ponte Milvio, the Ponte Nomentano. Also remarkable sightseeing is the extensive amount of ancient catacombs, or underground burial places under or near the city, of which there are at least forty, some discovered only in recent decades.
