Lindos Information Rhodes island
Lindos is located on the east coast of the island of Rhodes, 55 km south of the town of Rhodes. It is one of the most important cities and archaeological sites of the island.
Lindos attracts many tourists since it is built in a beautiful bay, with amazing beaches, and a great view to a small fishing village called Haraki.
The acropolis of Lindos is situated above the modern town and it is a fortress which was strengthened against attacks successively by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantine, the knights of St. John and the Ottomans.
Therefore, it is difficult to excavate and analyze it archaeologically. One can enjoy spectacular views of the close by harbors and seashore.
King Tlepolemus of Rhodes came to the island about in the 10th century BC and founded the city. Lindos was known as the Dorian Hexapolis, one of the six Dorian cities and due to Rhodes location, it was a natural meeting place
between the Greeks and the Phoenicians, resulting in its major growth. In the late 5th century the city of Rhodes was founded and the importance of Lindos declined.
The temple of Athena Lindia was finally formed in around 300 BC and during classical times it dominated the acropolis. More buildings were added in the Hellenistic and Roman period to the temple, but these buildings were not used during the medieval period. In the 14th century, though, the Knights of St. John reformed the temple into a fortress in order to defend the island against the Ottomans.
After his ship-wreck in Lindos, Apostole Paul founded tha Rhodian church and named Lindos’ bay after him.
Nowadays one can see on the acropolis parts of the following Buildings:
The Doric Temple of Athena Lindia
The Propylaea of the Sanctuary
The Hellenistic stoa
The well-known relief of a Rhodian trireme (warship) cut into the rock at the foot of the steps leading to the acropolis
The Hellenistic staircase
Remains of a Roman temple
The Castle of the Knights of St John
The Greek Orthodox Church of St John
In Lindos some scenes of the film The Guns of Navarone were filmed.
The municipality of Lindos consists of Lindos town and the villages of Kalathos, Pylona, Lardos and Laerma.
Visitors can be impressed from the town’s traditional elements such as the white houses, the ship-owners’ mansions, the Byzantine churches and the cobbled alleys.
