The port of Mytilene serves several ferry destinations and gets pretty busy during the summer months. Even though it is fairly small the port has all the necessary facilities.
Ferries connect the island with Piraeus and Chios daily and regularly with Thessaloniki, Lemnos, Kavala, Volos, Samos and Alexandroupolis. Small boats will take you to Aivali in Turkey.
At the heart of Aegean Sea the island of Lesvos that is also known as Mytilini can be found. The largest city of the island hosts most of the traffic and it is there that the port and the airport are located.
Mytilini is a historical city spread on seven green hills overlooking the sea. The city has an average of thirty thousand inhabitants and it is built on the ruins of the ancient city and port.
The place gave birth to numerous artists, musicians and writers throughtout its history. Sapfo, Alcaeos (the greatest lyrical poets) and Pittacos (one of the seven sages) were born here in antiquity.
Later on in modern days Odysseas Elytis (1911-1996) who was the winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for literature and one of the greatest Greek poets ever was also born in Mytilene

The city is beautiful with picturesque streets and many historical buildings and sites. It is filled with churches that host rare artifacts of the orthodox religion. Most of the shops are located at the traditional commercial street named Hermou.
The architecture is exquisite and of great variety since it was affected by different cultures within the centuries. It is in Lesvos that one can admire the amazing old mansions that suggested at their time a whole new perception on the Aegean Architecture.
