The tourist resort of Agia Pelagia is situated in about 20klm west of Heraklion city. The area has a unique beauty and ambience that cannot be easily described.
The landscape is wild with mountain surrounding the sandy beach. The name of the village derives from a monastery that is located 1klm away from the bay.
Compared to other beach resorts Agia Pelagia stands out since it can fulfill all kinds of taste giving visitors the chance to enjoy peaceful holidays or cosmopolitan ones.
The village is kind of spread with many hotels and rooms scattered on the surrounding hills.
The main beach is kind of small but sandy with crystal clear waters and a ‘boulevard’ of restaurants, cafes and bars embracing it.
The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy and there are plenty to do once you arrive. Numerous bars and cafes can be found in the village as well as super markets, pharmacy and shops.
The place has a rather cosmopolitan aura and the inhabitants are well known in the island for their happy and fun loving lifestyle.
The resort attracts both families, and young people and it is from the rare places that you can see both types having equally good times.
On the west side of the resort you will find three more quiet beaches. The first is called Kladissos the second one Psaromoura and the third one is Mononaftis.
While staying at Agia Pelagia you should not miss visiting those beaches since they all have a particular character surrounded by rocks and green hills. During the summer months though, and especially on Sundays they can be quite crowded.
In the main bay of Agia Pelagia village the taverns and some restaurants are not expensive and it is the best suggestion for your lunch or dinner right at the sea front.
Water sports are also available at the main beach like water bikes. In the main high street of the village you can find all the necessary facilities on offer such as gold- and silver jeweler shops, souvenir shops, internet cafes, an ATM, supermarkets and tobacconists.
Most of the accommodation facilities at Agia Pelagia have sea view due to the fact they are built in a panoramic way up on the hills so you will not be disappointed easily whatever is you choice –hotel or rent rooms.
Fodele village – The birthplace of El Greco is a picturesque village with a small river on the side full of trees and amazing taverns serving Cretan delicacies.
Savathiana monastery – Hidden in the green mountains above Savathiana monastery is a place to relax and enjoy a true religious spirit, just keep in mind it is not always allowed to enter especially if you have not been dressed properly.
