Gare de l'Est is one of the largest and the oldest railway stations in Paris. It is located in the 8th arrondissement, not far away from Gare du Nord, facing the boulevard de Strasbourg.
It is estimated that about 34 million passengers pass through the Gare de l'Est each year. It is the fifth-busiest station in Paris and is quite crowded even though, ever since the RER E, has been created, it has become less congested. Nowadays, the station is undergoing renovation work so as to accommodate trains on the new LGV line.
The original building, which is now the western wing, was built between 1847-1850 by François-Alexandre Duquesney in order to serve the line Paris-Strasbourg, it has been functioning since 1844.
Gare de l'Est was previously named Gare de Strasbourg to. Later on several extensions were built to keep up with the growing traffic such as the present eastern wing. Today, trains leave from Gare de l'Est towards eastern France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
